New Carissa
In 1999, the freighter New Carissa ran aground near Coos Bay, Oregon leaking fuel. Since this incident approximately 2/3 of the ship has been removed and towed offshore for scuttling. The remaining 1/3 of the vessel, which includes the stern and engine room, remains beached at the original site. In 2007, Titan Salvage, now owned by Crowley Maritime Corporation, was contracted to remove the remainder of the ship by October 2008. The salvage plan entails placing two liftboats at the wreck site from which the bulk of the work will be performed. Pfitzco, Inc designed a construction transporter (an aerial tramway) that provided safe and efficient transport of crew and materials between the shoreline staging area and the seaward work platforms. It is composed of a single tower within the staging area, a cable car, and a heavy wire cable run between the tower and one of the barges.
